Porous Paving

The parking lot east of route 32 was repaved with a porous material. The permeable surface allows rainwater to percolate through to the ground, reducing the amount of stormwater runoff. The idea is to keep the water out of storm drains where they can overwhelm the sewer system during rainstorms, bringing pollution into our waterways or overflowing into surrounding watersheds.

During a rain storm the difference between porous and non-porous pavement is clearly visible.

Porous vs non-porous

The water from the parking area flows into a nearby creek.
